The Trump administration’s latest allegations of mortgage fraud have raised questions about a long-standing housing issue known as owner-occupancy mortgage fraud. But that type of fraud can be difficult to prove, experts say.

President Donald Trump announced in a Truth Social post on Monday night that he was removing Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook. He cited allegations made by Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Bill Pulte that Cook committed mortgage fraud by claiming homes in two different states as her primary residence at the same time.

Cook’s attorney on Tuesday said Cook will file a lawsuit to challenge her removal.

“President Trump has no authority to remove Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook,” the lawyer, Abbe Lowell, said in a statement.

The Department of Justice has also recently targeted Sen. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., and New York Attorney General Letitia James with similar mortgage fraud allegations.

Here are the key things to know about owner-occupancy mortgage fraud, according to experts.

The main reason a borrower could be motivated to claim a primary residence on a mortgage application is to get a lower interest rate for that home.

Typically, mortgages for a primary residence have lower interest rates and homeowner’s insurance costs, said Keith Gumbinger, vice president of mortgage website HSH.

Mortgage interest rates are generally 0.5% to 1% higher for investment properties than for primary homes, according to Bankrate. Homeowners also typically pay about 25% more for insurance as a landlord compared with a standard homeowners policy, according to the Insurance Information Institute.

Owner-occupied means “you’re going to live there the majority of the time,” Gumbinger said. But there are limited exceptions, including for military service, parents providing housing for a disabled adult child or children providing housing for parents, according to Fannie Mae.

If a homeowner changes primary residences, they need to inform their mortgage lender that the original property is no longer owner-occupied, Gumbinger said.

There are also federal and state tax benefits for primary residences, according to Albert Campo, a certified public accountant and president of Campo Financial Group in Manalapan, New Jersey.

For example, when an owner sells a home and makes a profit, they can take a capital gains exemption worth up to $250,000 for single filers or $500,000 for married couples filing jointly, as long as they meet certain IRS rules, including owner occupancy for two of the past five years.

For tax purposes, a homeowner can have only one primary residence at a time.

When a taxpayer owns more than one home, proving which one is the primary residence is “always based on facts and circumstances,” Campo said. For example, a primary residence is typically where an owner spends most of their time, votes, files their tax returns and receives mail, he said.

A 2023 report from the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia found that more than 22,000 “fraudulent borrowers” misrepresented their owner-occupancy status, out of 584,499 loans originated from 2005 to 2017. The data was based on a subsample from more than 15 million loans originated during this period.

Typically, the fraudulent borrowers took out larger loans and had higher mortgage default rates, the authors found.

However, this type of fraud may be “difficult to detect until long after the mortgage has been originated,” the authors wrote.

“There is a difference between the court of law and the court of public opinion,” Jonathan Kanter, a law professor at Washington University in St. Louis and a former assistant attorney general, told CNBC’s “Squawk Box” last week when asked about Cook. “In the court of law, this is small ball and very difficult to prove.”

“You’d have to establish not only that she filled out the form incorrectly, but she had the specific intent to deceive, to defraud banks, as opposed to just making a mistake,” he said.

During fiscal year 2024, 38 mortgage fraud offenders were sentenced in the federal system, according to the United States Sentencing Commission’s interactive data analyzer. That number is up slightly from 34 offenders in 2023, but down from 426 offenders in 2015, the earliest date in that tool’s dataset. The U.S. Sentencing Commission data does not break out the types of mortgage fraud.

A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention official who posted his resignation letter on social media used the term ‘pregnant people’ and capped off his missive by including ‘he/his/him’ pronouns after his name.

‘I am writing to formally resign from my position as Director of the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), effective August 28, 2025, close of business,’ Dr. Demetre Daskalakis wrote in the lengthy post on X.

Daskalakis accused President Donald Trump’s administration of attempting ‘to erase transgender populations.’

‘For decades, I have been a trusted voice for the LGBTQ community when it comes to critical health topics. I must also cite the recklessness of the administration in their efforts to erase transgender populations, cease critical domestic and international HIV programming, and terminate key research to support equity as part of my decision,’ he wrote.

The inclusion of pronouns and the term ‘pregnant people’ caught people’s attention.

‘This resignation is a huge win for the Trump administration and the American people. We don’t need anyone who can’t understand basic biology working at the CDC,’ noted Jeremy Redfern, communications director for Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier.

Karol Markowicz tweeted, ‘No one who uses ‘pregnant people’ should work at the CDC. This isn’t hard.’ 

Responding to Markowicz’s post, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis wrote, ‘Example of how ‘trusting the science’ really means following the political science and perpetuating the prevailing narrative…’ He added, ‘Embracing evidence-based medicine should be the bare minimum for working at the CDC…’

Daskalakis suggested that the Department of Health and Human Services is on a ‘dangerous’ path.

‘I am unable to serve in an environment that treats CDC as a tool to generate policies and materials that do not reflect scientific reality and are designed to hurt rather than to improve the public’s health,’ he wrote.

‘I wish the CDC continued success in its vital mission and that HHS reverse its dangerous course to dismantle public health as a practice and as an institution. If they continue the current path, they risk our personal well-being and the security of the United States,’ Daskalakis concluded at the end of his message.

Tesla’s presence in the European electric vehicle market weakened further in July, with sales declining for the seventh consecutive month.

According to new data released by the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA), Tesla recorded a 40% year-on-year drop in new registrations, while Chinese rival BYD achieved a sharp increase.

The figures reflect growing competition in Europe’s electric vehicle segment, where Chinese carmakers are steadily expanding their market share and offering vehicles at competitive prices.

Tesla registrations fall, BYD climbs rapidly

Tesla registered 8,837 new vehicles across Europe in July, representing a steep decline compared with the same period in 2024.

The ACEA data showed that this slump came despite overall growth in the region’s battery electric vehicle sales.

At the same time, BYD reported 13,503 new car registrations in Europe during July, marking a 225% annual increase.

The Chinese manufacturer has been expanding aggressively across the continent, opening showrooms and launching models in several key markets.

This expansion has allowed BYD to rapidly capture more customers, making it a strong challenger in Europe’s growing electric vehicle industry.

Competitive pressures reshape Europe’s EV market

Tesla’s fall in sales comes as the automaker faces several challenges.

These include a lack of major refreshes to its vehicle line-up and increasing concerns about the brand’s reputation linked to Elon Musk’s outspoken presence and political associations in the US.

The company has acknowledged the need to diversify its offerings, with plans to introduce a more affordable electric vehicle.

Tesla has said volume production for this model is scheduled for the second half of 2025.

Analysts have noted that new launches will be crucial for Tesla, as its current vehicle line-up is ageing compared to competitors, and models such as the Cybertruck have not delivered the expected results.

Meanwhile, Chinese brands are scaling their presence at speed.

Data from JATO Dynamics revealed that Chinese automakers secured more than 5% of the European market share in the first half of 2024, a record high.

BYD has been a leading contributor to this surge, but other Chinese manufacturers are also moving quickly to introduce competitive vehicles and strengthen their foothold in the region.

Broader auto market impact

The competitive pressure from China is not limited to Tesla.

Other manufacturers, including Stellantis (owner of Jeep), South Korea’s Hyundai Group, and Japanese carmakers Toyota and Suzuki, also posted year-on-year declines in July registrations.

In contrast, some European firms managed to record gains during the same month.

Volkswagen, BMW, and Renault Group all reported growth in new car registrations across Europe, showing resilience in the face of rising competition.

Globally, Tesla has also seen signs of strain.

The company’s automotive revenue fell in the second quarter of the year, and Elon Musk has indicated that the business may experience “a few rough quarters” ahead.

Tesla has increasingly highlighted its work in artificial intelligence, robotics, and autonomous driving, but analysts have warned that investors remain concerned about the company’s slowing car sales.

The data underscores how Europe’s electric vehicle sector is becoming one of the most competitive markets in the world.

With Chinese brands like BYD expanding rapidly, and established European automakers strengthening their own positions, Tesla faces mounting pressure to reverse its sales decline and adapt to the changing landscape.

Frontier Airlines is going after customers of Spirit Airlines, whose financial footing has gotten so shaky in recent weeks that it warned earlier this month it might not be able to survive another year without more cash.

Frontier on Tuesday announced 20 routes it plans to start this winter, many of them in major Spirit markets like its base at Fort Lauderdale International Airport in Florida. Frontier overlaps with Spirit on 35% of its capacity, more than any other airline, according to a Monday note from Deutsche Bank airline analyst Michael Linenberg.

Some of Frontier’s new routes from Fort Lauderdale include flights to Detroit, Houston, Chicago and Charlotte, North Carolina. It’s also rolling out routes from Houston to New Orleans; San Pedro Sula, Honduras; and Guatemala City.

Frontier had tried and failed to merge with its budget airline rival several times since 2022.

“I’m not here to talk about M&A,” Frontier CEO Barry Biffle said in an interview with CNBC on Tuesday when asked whether Frontier would buy Spirit. Biffle said he expects that Frontier would pick up the majority of Spirit’s market share if Spirit collapsed.

Both carriers have struggled from changing customer tastes for more upmarket seats and trips abroad, an oversupply of domestic capacity, and higher labor and other costs. Spirit’s situation has become more dire however, after it emerged from four months of bankruptcy protection in March facing many of the same problems.

Ultra-low-cost airlines are also challenged by larger rivals like United Airlines, American Airline and Delta Air Lines that have rolled out their own no-frills basic economy tickets but also offer customers bigger choices of destinations and other perks onboard like snacks and beverages.

Stock prices of rival airlines surged after Spirit’s warning earlier this month.

Biffle said the carrier wants to become the country’s largest budget airline and has rolled out loyalty matching programs to grab more customers. Frontier’s capacity was slightly smaller than Spirit’s in the second quarter, through the latter had slashed its flying by nearly 24% from a year earlier, while Frontier was down only 2%.

Spirit last week said it drew down the entire $275 million of its revolver and while it reached a two-year extension on its credit card processing agreement with U.S. Bank N.A., it agreed that it would hold back up to $3 million a day from the carrier.

The airline lost $245.8 million in the second quarter. Frontier lost $70 million.

Spirit has been looking for ways to slash costs, including furloughing and demoting hundreds more pilots and cutting unprofitable routes. Hundreds of flight attendants are on unpaid leaves of absence.

Spirit CEO Dave Davis said in an Aug. 12 staff memo after its “going concern” warning that “the team and I are confident that we can build a Spirit that will continue to provide consumers the unmatched value that they have come to expect for many years to come.”

The carrier reached a deal with bondholders who agreed to convert debt to equity in its Chapter 11 bankruptcy, but it didn’t cut other costs like renegotiating aircraft leases. Leasing firms have been reaching out to rivals in recent weeks to gauge whether competitors would take any of the Airbus planes that are in Spirit’s hands, according to people familiar with the matter, who asked to speak anonymously because the talks were private.

In a statement obtained by Fox News Digital, the spokesperson noted, ‘Bill met with the president to discuss the importance of U.S. global health programs and health research that is necessary to save lives, protect Americans’ health, and preserve U.S. leadership in the world.’

Prior to the president’s inauguration for his second term, Wall Street Journal Editor-in-Chief Emma Tucker asked the mega-wealthy figure whether he had met with Trump since Trump’s victory in the 2024 presidential contest. 

Gates said that they had a ‘quite intriguing dinner,’ noting that it lasted more than three hours.

Danish toymaker Lego reported a record first-half performance on Wednesday, with sales rising 12% to 34.6 billion Danish crowns ($5.43 billion), boosted by strong consumer demand and partnerships with leading global brands.

The performance marked the best start to a year in Lego’s history, outpacing rivals Mattel and Hasbro in a competitive market.

“The toy market is actually back to growth this year, but we are outpacing it and taking market share,” Chief Executive Niels Christiansen said.

“It’s the best first half ever,” Christiansen told CNBC. “It’s a record on revenue, a record on operating profit, it’s a record on net profit. … So, we are very happy.”

He noted that the global toy industry grew by nearly 7% in the same period, while Lego achieved double that rate.

Strong profit growth and supply chain resilience

Operating profit for the first six months rose 10% to 9 billion crowns, with Christiansen attributing the gains to Lego’s manufacturing network spanning six countries, including Denmark, Hungary, Mexico, China, and Vietnam.

“We have a reasonable setup in our supply chain. So the logic we apply is that we would like to produce the product as close to the consumers as possible,” Christiansen said.

The company’s geographically diversified factories have helped it manage tariff impacts more effectively than peers reliant on Chinese production.

Construction of a new US factory in Virginia is underway, expected to open in 2027.

Christiansen emphasized that the plant was planned for growth, rather than as a reaction to trade disputes. Lego is also expanding sites in Mexico and Hungary to meet increasing global demand.

Expanding product lineup with major brand tie-ups

The company launched a record 314 new sets in the first half of 2025, expanding its catalog with collaborations across entertainment and pop culture.

Partnerships with Formula One, Fortnite, Jurassic Park, Bluey, and anime franchise One Piece have attracted new consumer segments, while a tie-up with Pokémon is set to debut in 2026.

“You can always find something that you really like, the pop culture you’re into or the passion point you have,” Christiansen said, highlighting the importance of licensed sets in diversifying Lego’s fan base.

In addition, Lego’s botanical line—featuring plants, succulents, and flower bouquets—has proven successful in attracting adult customers, many of whom move on to larger, more complex builds.

The partnership with Epic Games, which integrates elements from Fortnite into physical sets, has also expanded Lego’s reach into the digital gaming world.

Growth across global markets, including China

Lego reported sales growth across all major markets, including China, where it has faced challenges in recent years.

US sales grew at double-digit rates, supported by renewed consumer demand and an improved retail environment.

The company also opened 24 new stores worldwide in the first half of 2025, with a focus on countries such as China and India, where Lego is still building brand recognition.

Christiansen said brick-and-mortar stores remain a key driver of growth, offering customers hands-on experiences that encourage purchases.

Outpacing rivals amid market uncertainty

While the broader toy market has returned to growth, Lego continues to outperform peers.

Analysts point to its brand partnerships, resilient supply chain, and global expansion as factors that give it an edge over competitors.

By contrast, Barbie-maker Mattel and Hasbro, the company behind My Little Pony, face greater volatility due to their reliance on Chinese manufacturing.

Despite lingering economic uncertainty, Christiansen said Lego has not seen evidence of US consumers trading down to cheaper products.

“It’s a record on revenue, a record on operating profit, it’s a record on net profit. … So, we are very happy,” he told CNBC.

As Lego looks ahead to its 2026 Pokémon collaboration and further store openings, the company is positioning itself to sustain growth while maintaining its dominance in the global toy market.

Cracker Barrel tried to reassure customers Monday that its values have remained the same after it received criticism following a new logo reveal and general brand refresh.

The company promised customers in a statement that while its logo may be different, its values — “hard work, family, and scratch-cooked food made with care’ — are not.

“You’ve shown us that we could’ve done a better job sharing who we are and who we’ll always be,” the statement read, adding that Cracker Barrel will remain “a place where everyone feels at home, no matter where you’re from or where you’re headed.”

Last week, the company unveiled a new logo that no longer features a man leaning against a barrel or the words ‘Old Country Store.’ Instead, it featured the company’s name, in a color scheme that it said was inspired by the chain’s scrambled eggs and biscuits.

The change was part of a ‘strategic transformation’ that aimed to update the chain’s visual elements, spaces, food and retail offerings. The company’s shares are down about 8.5% since the reveal ignited criticism, especially from those in conservative circles.

Donald Trump Jr., the president’s son, amplified a post Wednesday suggesting that the logo change was intended to erase the American traditions aspect of the branding and make it more general and lean into diversity, equity and inclusion efforts.

On Monday, the chain also shared an update on the man in the original logo, Uncle Herschel, who is said is still featured on menus and road signs and in stores.

‘He’s not going anywhere — he’s family,’ the company said in the statement.

Cracker Barrel said its focuses remain country hospitality and generous portions of food at fair prices. The refresh, it said, was to ensure the restaurant will be there for the next generation.

‘That means showing up on new platforms and in new ways, but always with our heritage at the heart,’ it said.

‘We know we won’t always get everything right the first time, but we’ll keep testing, learning, and listening to our guests and employees.’

President Donald Trump is pushing a new economic strategy: having the U.S. government take direct stakes in major U.S. companies. He argues it’s a way to make the country stronger by shoring up industries that fuel prosperity and safeguard national security.

The first big example came last week, when the White House announced the government now owns nearly 10% of Intel. The California-based chipmaker had received federal grants to boost U.S. production, but those funds have now been converted into a formal ownership share.

The U.S. government has historically offered loans, tax breaks, or contracts to private companies — but owning stock in them is much less common, raising questions about how far Trump’s approach might go and how Intel’s competitors may view the move.

One of those competitors, SkyWater Technology, a Minnesota-based semiconductor foundry with deep ties to the defense sector, welcomed the precedent while underscoring its all-American footprint.

‘We view equity stakes as an important tool to ensure accountability when taxpayer dollars support companies whose global structures raise questions about long-term U.S. benefit,’ Ross Miller, SVP of Commercial and A&D Business, told Fox News Digital. 

He contrasted that with SkyWater’s position as a fully domestic manufacturer: ‘SkyWater is different — we are U.S.-headquartered and U.S.-operated, with no foreign ownership or entanglements.’

‘Every dollar invested here directly strengthens America’s infrastructure, workforce, and independence,’ Miller added.

Looking ahead, he said SkyWater hopes to deepen collaboration with the Trump administration to expand domestic capacity in foundational chip technologies — the tried-and-true manufacturing methods that still power reliable systems in airplanes, automobiles, defense, biomedical equipment and even quantum computing.

SkyWater isn’t the only U.S. chipmaker that could be affected by Trump’s new approach. New York-based GlobalFoundries, a semiconductor manufacturer, operates large-scale chip fabs in New York and Vermont. Supported by federal funding, these sites play a central role in U.S. efforts to bring back more domestic chip production.

Given the firm’s federally-backed fabs on U.S. soil, GlobalFoundries could become a candidate for equity-linked deals tied to Trump’s semiconductor resilience goals. 

Similarly, Micron Technology, which is investing tens of billions of dollars to build memory chip fabs in New York and Idaho with the support of CHIPS Act funding, could also fall under consideration. The Boise, Idaho-based company has positioned itself as a cornerstone of U.S. efforts to restore leadership in advanced memory manufacturing.

GlobalFoundries and Micron did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.

On Monday, Trump suggested this was just the beginning. ‘I hope I’m going to have many more cases like it,’ he told reporters at the White House, hinting that his administration could pursue similar deals in other sectors.

But not everyone sees the move as positive. 

‘This is bad policy and the most glaring example to date of the administration’s tilt towards socialism. It’s an unprecedented move, so I’m hesitant to make any predictions,’ explained Jai Kedia, a research fellow at the Cato Institute’s Center for Monetary and Financial Alternatives.

Kedia also warned the policy could display ‘favoritism towards large firms that can negotiate deals with the executive at the expense of small and mid-size firms that do not have the political clout to arrange such deals.’
